 KIC Lesson Plan for Kiwanis Club an= d Key Club members

Concept: To teach= and to empower the children to take charge of their family’s fire safety.

 

General Goal: To = save lives by providing the dedicated program and tools for children to make the= ir home fire safe.

 

Specific Objectiv= es: To empower the student to change their smoke alarm batteries, while providing a family based education and reward program.

 

Required Material= s: Poster, demonstration smoke alarm, demonstration KIC flying disc (which includes an instructional DVD, instructions, certificate and batteries),

enough sealed discs for each child.  In addition, you will need to veri= fy from the teacher what the reward component is going to be in advance of your program presentation.

 

Anticipatory Set (Lead-In): Smoke and Fire Kills!!!!. Over 3000 p= eople in the United States died last year do to fires= in their homes. Most of these people could have been

saved if they would have had a working smoke alarm.

 

Your job will be = to make sure you and your family has a working smoke alarm in your home. You can ma= ke a difference! What you do does count!

 

 

Cleaning and changing the battery. Follow manufactures directions.

 

 

Step-By-Step Proc= edures:

a.&n= bsp;      Introduce the Ki= wanis Club or Key Members present and yourself.

b.&n= bsp;     Explain the spec= ific goals of the KIC program listed above.

c.&n= bsp;      Ask the students= if they know what a smoke alarm is and if they have one in their home.

d.&n= bsp;     Explain why the = smoke alarm gives their family “early warning” from a fire and it all= ows them the time to escape.

e.&n= bsp;      Present the demonstration smoke alarm and show the students how their parents will need= to clean the smoke alarm and change the batteries with their assistance and en= couragement. Have the students listen to the sound the detector makes once the batteries have been changed.

f.&n= bsp;      Show and explain= the different components in the KIC Safety Disc Package

g.&n= bsp;     Pass out the KIC Safety Disc to each student

h.&n= bsp;     Walk them throug= h the opening up of the disc and explaining the content covering the DVD, disc, instructions, batteries and the reward certificate.

a.&n= bsp;      Empower the chil= dren to take charge! Encourage them to get their families involved. 

b.&n= bsp;     Have the school’s classroom instructor tell the students what the reward porti= on of the program will consist of and the timeline required.=
